Termites live in colonies in mounds, nests or in wood. They are commonlly called 'white ants' although their appearance is somewhat different.
Termites as Pests
Termites are notorious for structural damage to wooden buildings, fences, railway sleepers, poles, posts, bridges, forest trees and even a variety of crops in the drier inland. They eat cellulose, starches and sugars (carbohydrates) found in wood. Sapwood is preferred by termites to heartwood because it has a better food value and is less durable than heartwood.
